Sunshine Reduces Colorectal Cancer?

An interesting study looked at the incidence of colorectal cancer based upon how far people lived form the equator. Researchers wanted to discover if a greater exposure to sunlight would reduce the risk of colorectal cancer. They found that “incidence of colon cancer was highest in countries distant from the equator.”

As you spend time this summer, be sure to get out doors and get some sun. Sunlight helps your body produce Vitamin D which is thought to have a positive impact on different kinds of cancer, including colorectal cancer.

Migraine Tied to Brain Injury in Older Adults

Migraine tied to brain injury in older adults- Chiropractic NewsNew research shows that older adults with migraine have a greater risk of a certain type of brain injury known as subclinical brain infarction.

Subclinical brain infarction is a blockage of blood to the brain area that can affect a person both neurologically (impeding their movement) and cognitively (altering their brain function),causing the affected tissues to die. These brain injuries are more common in older adults and can result in a stroke, which can produce some rather serious and life-impeding negative side effects such as difficulty speaking, paralysis, and even death.

In a study from the University of Miami, researchers discovered that older adults suffering from migraine headaches had a 50% greater risk of eventually suffering from this type of brain injury. The study included 546 individuals with a mean age of 71. Overall, 41% were male and approximately 75% of were Hispanic.

Some Questions Remain

Although the findings present a possible connection between migraines and subclinical brain infarction, researchers said this does not establish causality. Additionally, they recommend that more studies be conducted in regard to race and ethnicity to see if these are factors as well.

Treatment for Brain Infractions and Migraine

The symptoms of a brain infarction are similar to other types of brain injury, including: headaches; changes in personality, mood or behavior; memory loss or confusion; nausea or vomiting; fever; or difficulty moving.

If you suspect that you or a loved one has suffered from a brain infarction or other injury, it’s important to seek medical attention as soon as possible to ensure you’re receiving adequate rehabilitation.

Many chiropractors are trained to spot the signs of brain injuries, and can connect you with appropriate healthcare providers. Chiropractors can also offer safe and effective treatment of migraines in older adults searching for a drug-free way to manage their pain.

Vitamin D for Your Eyes

Glaucoma is a disease that gradually reduces your eye’s ability to see. Open-angle glaucoma (OAG) causes you to lose your peripheral vision first as the disease progresses to a more advanced state.

A ground-breaking study found an association with people who had low levels of Vitamin D and open-angle glaucoma. “The findings of this research suggest that vitamin D deficiency should be considered as a potential risk factor for the development of OAG.”

While this is a new finding, Vitamin D has many benefits for your health. Talk to your doctor of chiropractic to insure that you are getting the nutrition you need to be your best.

How Chiropractors Can Help Sports Concussions

How Chiropractors Can Help Sports Concussions

Sports concussions are common in soccer and football, and chiropractors can help. Photo by Dreamstime.

In the U.S., there are a minimum of 300,000 sport-related concussions per year. If your child is in contact sports, there’s a risk of the contact ending up in a concussion.  In fact research suggests that the number of documented cases of concussions among children is on the rise, and is source of growing concern among soccer and football players.

Chiropractors may not be the first medical professional you imagine when it comes to concussion management, but many chiropractors are trained to spot the signs of a mild traumatic brain injury, and support the patient in a successful recovery. Two recent literature reviews outlined how chiropractors can effectively manage athletes with concussions.

Is Chiropractic Treatment Valid for Concussion?

Chiropractors are often the first health care provider to care for patients who are suffering from a head injury, such as those incurred in sports or car accidents. Chiropractors, especially ones who are certified additionally by the American Chiropractic Board of Sports Physicians, regularly manage athletes who suffer from concussions.

Chiropractors use a specific assessment tool called the Sport Concussion Assessment Tool 2 (SCAT2) to evaluate, assess, and manage concussions in athletes 10 years and older with the end goal of safely returning the athlete back to the sport. This assessment tool is used to evaluate symptoms, physical signs, Glasgow Coma Scale, sideline assessment using Maddocks score, cognitive assessment, balance, and coordination.

They understand that if certain symptoms are indicators that the neurological symptoms are worsening:

  • Vomiting

  • Blurred vision

  • Stumbling

  • Increased confusion

  • Unconsciousness

  • Dilated pupils

  • Weakness in on arm/leg

  • Worsening headache

Because a concussion is a brain injury caused by a direct blow to the head, neck or face, there’s a good chance that the blow has caused a misalignment of the cervical spine. This is similar to whiplash causing a misalignment of the cervical spine. A chiropractor can evaluate whether you demonstrate signs of neck injuries commonly associated with concussions, and provide you with relief of neck pain and cervicogenic headaches.

According to the literature reviews, one of the most important recommendations that a chiropractor will tell you what to do for concussion is this: If your child is in sports and suffers a blow to the head, and/or experiences signs of a concussion, do not let him continue playing the sport. He or she needs to rest until totally healed from the concussion. Only after symptoms subside is it time to get back into the game. Ease into the sports play again. Don’t expect to jump back in, full force. This will prevent the return of symptoms.

Additional guidelines your chiropractor will give you for concussion include no alcohol, aspirin, anti-inflammatory medications, and sleep agents should be taken. Use Tylenol for pain if necessary. Do not drive until you can return to the sport.

In the meantime, your chiropractor will care for your child’s cervical spine and condition. If your child needs to be referred out to another health professional, your chiropractor will let you know.

Now let’s ask the question again. Chiropractic for concussion? Absolutely?

Chiropractors can help with a range of other sports injuries, and one study even found that it was the most effective conservative method for reducing sports-related back pain.

Debunking “No Pain, No Gain”

Debunking “No Pain No Gain”The adage “no pain no gain” has been around for decades in sports, and it implies that in order to achieve great things, you have to push yourself beyond your physical limits. But, what exactly is pain trying to tell you and, perhaps more importantly, how does your body know that you’re getting close to or moving beyond your limits? That is what a set of researchers set to find out, and their discovery may just change the way you view this age-old phrase.

The Testing

A set of nine researchers from the University of Utah’s Department of Anesthesiology were curious as to how our muscles and bodies seem to know when we’re either near or at our physical limits. Drawing on previous research, they were already aware of the fact that muscles that are exercised release three key substances: lactate, acids, and ATP ( adenosine triphosphate).

To test the effects that these substances have on the body, the researchers injected the chemicals into the thumbs of 10 individuals. The subjects reported no difference when each of the substances was injected individually, but when the chemicals were combined into one injection, the subjects started to feel fatigue effects that one would normally get after a workout. The subjects described their thumb muscles as heavy, tired, swollen, and puffy after receiving the combined chemical injections. And the more the researchers increased the strength of the injections, like what happens when the workout is more grueling, the greater the effects.

Further Testing

Scientists speculate that the effects of these three substances is like an early warning sign that you’re about to reach your limits, but what happens if you take the warning signs away? In another experiment involving some of the same researchers, they tested what happens when exercisers are blinded to this pain. A group of cyclists were given drugs to block the communication between the nerves and brain, so that they could temporarily avoid feeling fatigue and pain as they exercised.  The results?

Although the cyclists experienced enhanced performance, their bodies gave in and were in near-paralytic states. Some even had to be helped from their bicycles as they were unable to do this on their own.

If you are in sports, it is important to listen to your body and heed its warning signs. Chiropractic care is another valuable tool for sports enthusiasts as it keeps your body aligned and in proper form, so that your performance is the best it can be. In fact, earlier research has shown that chiropractic can indeed assist in improving sports performance.
