Teens Are Being Prescribed Narcotics At An Alarming Rate

Teens Are Being Prescribed Narcotics At An Alarming Rate – How Chiropractic Care Can Stop This TrendA recent study revealed that a significant number of children are receiving narcotic prescriptions for their headaches, causing great concern about the negative repercussions if this trend does not stop. After all, these types of medications come with some serious side effects and consequences but are routinely being prescribed to adolescents who aren’t always able to make educated, rational decisions regarding their usage.

What One Study Reveals

One particular study looked at over 8,000 adolescents between the ages of 13 and 17 who sought medical treatment for their headaches (trauma-related headaches were excluded). What the researchers found was alarming and not necessarily what most would expect.

Approximately 46% of the teens who suffered with headaches and sought medical relief received a prescription for some type of opioid, which could be anything from hydrocodone to morphine to oxycodone, or any other narcotic. Additionally around 48% were able to get yet another opioid prescription on a follow-up visit (giving them access to two opioid scripts) and roughly 29% of them obtained three opioid prescriptions or more.

The Repercussions

While pain killers like these certainly have their place in the treatment of various illnesses and injuries, there are some major consequences to using them so freely. Biologically, they can affect the growing adolescent’s digestive system by causing constipation, nausea, and vomiting. Behaviorally, opioids tend to make them extremely drowsy – which isn’t going to help a child who is expected to do well in school or a kid that just got his or her driver’s license and wants to drive the family car.

Additionally, a large number of adolescents experiment with alcohol, which can be dire or even deadly when combined with opioid usage. Children who are on antidepressants or take sleeping pills face possible interactions as well.

Then there is the issue of tolerance and addiction. Over time, more and more of the drug is necessary to get the same pain relief. It can lead to dependence on the drug, maybe even causing them to seek out other pain killers to feel even better, not unlike the growing numbers of adults with chronic pain addicted to narcotics. The past decade has witnessed a twofold increase in the number of opioid prescriptions, according to a study from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

The Chiropractic Solution

Chiropractic care is a great alternative to curing headache pain as opposed to just masking it. It can ease everything from stress-related head pain to severe migraines , and it does so naturally and effectively, making it one of the best drug-free solutions for children and adolescents.

Vitamin D for Dysmenorrhea

Dysmenorrhea (also known as menstrual cramps) can be very severe for some women. Some studies have begun to draw an association between a lack of vitamin D and dysmenorrhea. A recent study of young women looked at this association and found “a high prevalence of vitamin D insufficiency and secondary hyperparathyroidism (overactive parathyroid glands which produce too much parathyroid hormone) and/or low dietary calcium intake among adolescent and young adult females who experience severe and very severe dysmenorrhea may negatively affect bone metabolism during achievement of peak bone mass at a young age and adverse bone health at older age.”

If you are a woman experiencing severe dysmenorrhea , talk to your doctor of chiropractic to see if you are getting enough vitamin D and calcium.

FDA Warns Against Epidural Injections for Back Pain

Epidural steroid injections must now carry new warning labels about the possible risks of serious adverse events, according to a new FDA announcement issued last week, as reported by Medpage Today.

“Injecting corticosteroids into the epidural space of the spine has been a widespread practice for many decades; however, the effectiveness and safety of the drugs for this use have not been established, and FDA has not approved corticosteroids for such use,” the agency wrote in a recent safety announcement.

After an analysis of the medical literature and its own database, the agency decided that although serious risks of epidural steroids are rare, they are severe enough to require a warning label. Rare serious adverse events include stroke, paralysis, loss of vision, and death.

The agency said its new warning is unrelated to an outbreak of fungal meningitis tied to contaminated epidural steroid injections from the New England Compounding Center in 2012-13.The outbreak led to 64 deaths and affected 751 patients who had received the injections for various spinal injections, according to the CDC.

Earlier research has questioned the efficacy and safety of epidural steroid injections for the routine treatment of back pain, neck pain, and sciatica.  Last year, a study from the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery found that epidural steroid injections increased bone fragility in patients over the age of 50 years old. Each individual injection was associated a greater risk of vertebral fractures by a factor of 1.21.

A number of non-surgical options can provide back-pain relief without the risk of epidural steroid injections. When comparing chiropractic care to epidural nerve root injections, a study found that chiropractic patients actually had greater reductions in back pain and lower medical costs.

Case Study Suggests Chiropractic May Dramatically Help Bell’s Palsy Patients

Case Study Suggests Chiropractic May Dramatically Help Bell’s Palsy PatientsIndividuals diagnosed with Bell’s palsy (which is characterized by paralysis of facial nerves, usually on one side of the face that results in a drooping effect) often have limited options when it comes to treatment. Some are medicine-based with the use of steroids and antivirals, others involve the use of electrical stimulation or low-level laser therapy (LLLT), and still others require manipulation of the body via osteopathic techniques, acupuncture, and chiropractic care to improve the function of the nerves.

So, which methods offer the most help and hope for those who are diagnosed with this particular condition? One research study suggests that it is a mixture of chiropractic care and LLLT and they have a case study to prove it.

The Case Study

Lisa M. Rubis DC, MS outlined the details in which she had a male patient who was 40 years of age in her office after enduring paralysis on the left side of his face for a period of 10 days. He was unable to close his eye and he was suffering from excessive tearing and a burning feeling. In addition, he had difficulty making his left lip move up and noticed that he drooled when he brushed his teeth.

Previous to seeing a chiropractor, he had visited his primary physician who prescribed him steroids which didn’t seem to ease his symptoms. He was also referred to a neurologist who performed additional testing and found no issues. It was then that he sought the help of his chiropractor turned out to be a turning point in his recovery.

Dramatic Results

The chiropractor saw the patient on three separate occasions within two weeks. The first visit consisted of LLLT and cervical manipulation, after which there was a noticeable difference as the patient had wrinkling over his left forehead. The second visit occurred four days later and the patient self-reported a 70-80% improvement.

The third visit (which involved spinal manipulation only) left him fully functional and he didn’t even feel it necessary to show up for a fourth appointment. He was contacted four years after this event when he reported that he had no further problems.

Research suggests that using laser therapy alone typically takes between 14-66 sessions to see a resolution in symptoms. The addition of chiropractic appeared to hasten recovery in this case study. Future studies are needed to confirm the results of this case study, but the results do offer hope to patients searching for natural relief.

Chiropractic cervical manipulations have a range of benefits for relieving headaches caused by cervical dysfunction as well as non-specific neck pain.

Study: Chiropractors Popular in Midwest

cdc-study

Folks on the West Coast are faithful followers of yoga and meditation. Midwesterners turn to chiropractors or osteopathic doctors for their aches and pains.

And nearly one in every five Americans uses herbal supplements like ginseng, Echinacea, ginkgo biloba and St. John’s Wort.

Those are just some of the findings of a new federal government report on complementary and alternative medicine trends in the United States.

The report, derived from national health survey data collected in 2012, shows clear regional trends in the way Americans choose to use complementary medicine, said report co-author Tainya Clarke.

“It is important to continue to monitor the use of these complementary health approaches among the U.S. population, and this is the most recent national data out there,” said Clarke, a service fellow with the U.S. National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“By highlighting regional differences, we can stimulate further research and help people make informed decisions,” she said.

After looking at data on almost 35,000 people across the country, the researchers found that:

  • Yoga with deep breathing or meditation is about 40 percent more common in the Pacific and Mountain states than in the country overall.

  • Use of chiropractic or osteopathic manipulation is nearly twice as high in the “West North Central region” — from the Dakotas and Minnesota down to Kansas and Missouri — than the rest of the United States.

  • People in the Pacific, Mountain and West North Central states are more likely to use massage therapy, compared with the rest of the country.

In general, people living in southern and Mid-Atlantic states have less use for complementary or alternative medicine, the researchers found.

There was one notable exception, however — in all parts of the country, large numbers of people appear to be using herbal dietary supplements.

Use of such supplements ranges from a high of 28.7 percent of Mountain state residents to a low of 13.1 percent in the South Atlantic states.

Herbal supplements constitute the most popular complementary health trend in the United States, according to the report, published April 16 as a NCHS Data Brief. About 18 percent of Americans use herbal supplements, more than double that of the next most popular complementary medicines — chiropractic and osteopathic manipulation (8.5 percent) and yoga (8.4 percent).

The findings are important and will help practitioners of alternative medicine better focus their efforts, said Dr. Molly Roberts, president of the American Holistic Medical Association (AHMA).

“It is good to see the CDC putting its attention to where Americans are seeking care in today’s marketplace,” Roberts said. “At the AHMA, we feel that listening to our patients is the best way to help them find the healing they need. We applaud this study and are working to create greater dialogue around how we can help transform health care.”

While the new study didn’t look into why these regional differences exist, Clarke said it’s likely the result of several factors such as education, culture and the availability of complementary health services.

For example, people in the Pacific and Mountain states are more likely to use yoga and massage therapy, which both focus on wellness and disease prevention, she said.

“You have a lot of yoga in California and those regions, and you see less evidence of disease treatments like chiropractic care,” Clarke said. On the other hand, people in the Midwest who partake less in wellness practices may be more apt to get injured and need chiropractic manipulation, she added.

The dearth of complementary and alternative medicine use in the South could come down to the fact that such services aren’t offered as frequently there, Clarke added.

“You don’t find as many yoga studios in more rural areas,” she said. “You’re not going to have a lot of other people using some of these complementary health approaches.”

Friends Keep You Healthy

An interesting study looked at “Long-term illness (LTI) and psychosomatic complaints (PSC)” in children ages 2 – 17 and how these are impacted by leisure time activity. What they found is that “’Reading books’, ‘visiting friends’, ‘listening to music’ and ‘activity in organisations’ were related to an absence of PSC, LTI and well-being. ‘Surfing/blogging on the Internet’ was negatively related to LTI, PSC and well-being.” Further examination found that “’visits or is visited by friends’ was related with a low probability for LTI and also with a high probability for well-being.”

Actively spending more time with friends can turning off the television (X-Box, etc.) can enhance your child’s health. Consider limiting sedentary activities in favor of social ones.

Weight Gain May Lead to Bone Loss

http://www.chironexus.net/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/scale-dreamstime.jpgWhen it comes to weight, there is no doubt that there are major benefits to getting rid of excess fat in the name of good health. Your heart becomes stronger, your lungs function better and more easily, and your muscles are able to better handle whatever load you place on them.

However, researchers have just found yet another reason to entice individuals to lose any extra weight and it’s one that has never before been realized.

The Old Thought vs. The New Findings

It used to be believed that having a higher weight meant that you developed stronger bones to help carry your additional pounds around. While this thought makes sense in theory, one recent study has discovered that it isn’t so black and white. In fact, being too overweight can actually have the opposite effect.

Jasminka Z. Ilich, a researcher at FloridaStateUniversity, led a team of five other reviewers who thoroughly looked through the files of 200 women who had previously been studied for various other reasons. They noted each woman’s bone density, muscle mass, and fat tissue to see if there was a correlation amongst these three variables.

The researchers found that approximately 33% of the women studied had 30% or more fat tissue, resulting in reduced bone density and lower muscle mass. This means that too much fat makes bones and muscles weaker, opening the individual up to a higher risk of fractures and a greater inability to move around with ease.

Ilich admits that an increase in fat and decrease in bone density and muscle mass with age are common, but too much fat worsens the effect of the latter two – especially for women. Therefore, maintaining a healthy weight is key to strong and healthy bones and muscles now and well into the golden years.

The Chiropractic Response

For these reasons, it is important for chiropractors to work with patients to help them successfully lose any excess weight. And it is equally as imperative for individuals who are carrying a few extra pounds to shed them in order to protect their bones and muscles both short and long term. Research suggests that chiropractors can successfully support individuals in their efforts to shed weight.

This is one case where less is truly more.
