Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, etc.) is often used to address minor pain. Sold over-the-counter, it is considered by many to be a “safe” drug. Yet, it is widely known that all drugs have side effects, some of which are not readily known for decades (ibuprofen was patented in 1961.
A recent study found that use of ibuprofen by athletes “aggravates exercise-induced small intestinal injury and induces gut barrier dysfunction in healthy individuals.” The researchers concluded that “nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (which includes ibuprofen) consumption by athletes is not harmless and should be discouraged.”
