Health Advice for the Decades
In Your 20's you want to focus on breaking bad health habits and starting good ones. Your diet should be low in calories and high in plant food. Keep friendships alive. Wear sunscreen and no binge drinking. Get baseline exams to better track your health as you age.
In Your 30's now is the time to understand how your genetic background may affect your health. Tests to consider if your family history includes disease are colonscopies, prostate screenings, mammograms and any heart disease related exam for both men and women. Update your workout to make sure your weight stays within a small range of what it should be. Nurture yourself by striving to reach your goals and by maintaining a relaxed attitude towards life. Get involved!
In Your 40's this is traditionally a time when people begin to re-evaluate their lives and when many begin to worry about aging. Time to add more tests to your repertoire. Women should get a baseline bone-density scan, while both men and women should be tested for diabetes. Even if your weight is relatively unchanged from 20 years ago, add muscle-building strength exercises to your regimen. Add more soy products like soybeans and tofu to your diet.
In Your 50's sexual health, in terms of impotence or lack of libido in both sexes, becomes an issue. Keep the lines of communication open with your partner. Stay on top of cancer tests. Be a mentor and begin celebrating any and all rites of passage.
60's and Beyond. The key word now is body integrity. Your goal should be to stay active - both mentally and physically. Talk to your physician about any changes you notice in your memory. Stay connected to friends and family but also remain independent. Stay safe and accept changes. Continue to exercise but don't be surprised if you suddenly want to play golf or practice restorative yoga rather than hike or take a swim. Part of aging gracefully is going with the flow.
And during all your years, it is very important to visit your chiropractor regularly!

Moving Your Body - Changing Your Thoughts Around Exercise

Are you overwhelmed by the idea of integrating EXERCISE into your daily regime? I'm constantly reminded that many of us think of exercise as a huge effort that requires a freeing up of hours and hours each day. It can be that way (let me tell you about Ironman training, lol), BUT it certainly doesn't have to be that time consuming.
Some of my favorite ways to integrate more movement into my daily routine:
1. Stairs - easiest way. Skip the escalator and elevator. If it's too difficult to get to work with all your stuff, buy a backpack and wear it properly. You'll feel so much more envigorated.
2. Park a reasonable ways away in the parking lot. Stop being that person who circles the lot 3 times to find the closest available parking spot.
3. Walk your dog. It doesn't have to be 5 miles. How about a mile? (I think miles when I exercise. It sounds so much more manageable than 1.6 kms). Chances are you'll enjoy yourself so much you'll go 2 miles some days.
4. Put your foam roller right beside your living room chair or television set. Get down there and roll around on your foam roller for a few minutes each night. It feels great and so little effort is required. If you really get inspired throw in a few intervals of holding plank and side plank or perhaps some abs on a stability ball.
5. Do squats while you wait for the kettle to boil. In 5 minutes think of how many squats and lunges you can achieve.
6. Multitask! I have a huge number of parents in my practice who spend HOURS and HOURS at rinks, gymnasiums and swimming pools each week. While your child is training take the time to move your body! Chances are the person you spend the hour talking to is happy to go out for a 30 minute power walk or upstairs to the Magna's track for a walk.
Think outside the box. Instead of being overwhelmed with fitting in an hour of exercise think of where in your day you can make modifications that will allow your body to keep moving. If you have some suggestions please comment!
