Kevin's Story
On February 7, 2009, Toronto EMS Paramedic Kevin Mills sustained a severe spinal cord injury while on vacation in Cuba with his wife and young son. After evacuation to Canada, and surgery at Sunnybrook Hospital, Kevin was transferred to the Lyndhurst Hospital for rehabilitation.
Prior to his accident, Kevin was an avid rock climber, runner, and outdoorsman.
Kevin's initial prognosis was poor, and he was told he would only be able to control an electric wheelchair with his head. However, if you know Kevin, you'll know he is a very determined person, and that was something he refused to accept. Today, Kevin is now pushing a manual chair with power assist wheels, which increases the strength of his push. All of his therapies have helped him improve from this initial diagnoses to a manual chair.
Kevin's continued improvement is due, not only to his unbelievable determination and the love and support of his family and friends, but to the program Step It Up Recovery. Their mission statement (from web site) : This program exists to provide those living with a spinal cord injury the opportunity to achieve their greatest recovery potential and an overall increased quality of life. Patients achieve this with an innovative, specialized exercise-based recovery program, dedicated staff, in an environment filled with support, hope and motivation.
Considering his initial prognosis, Kevin has made incredible progress, and he continues to improve daily. In light of the immense expenses associated with Kevin’s situation and rehabilitation, an account has been set up to collect contributions for Kevin and his family. If you wish to make a donation directly to this effort, you can find the information on Kevin's Facebook page: Praying For Kevin Mills.
