In today’s medical practice as well as due to current cultural norms, symptoms of acute illness in children are viewed as something bad, believed by many to be avoided and stopped at all costs. In this workshop, participants will begin to understand why, on a body-mind-spirit level, children must experience their symptoms and illnesses as an important rite of passage. By suppressing symptoms and illness with medications, antibiotics, and vaccines, we may not only be harming children in the short-term, but we maybe contributing to the development of chronic illnesses in the long-term. In a nutshell, we need to let children get sick in order for them to be well.

Dr. Lawrence Palevsky, MD, is back for another informative workshop on the safety and effectiveness of vaccines. Dr. Palevsky is a board certified pediatrician and international lecturer who maintains private practice in NYC. He teaches holistic integrative pediatric and adolescent medicine to parents and medical and allied health professionals both nationally and internationally. He has been quoted in many national and local publications, and has been featured on news programs, documentaries, and radio shows.

I highly recommend this speaker. He is very informative and well educated. Bring your head, heart and questions to this invaluable opportunity for those looking to further their knowledge base on this important topic.

Keep those Babies Warm!

I have a bit of an obsession with keeping my babies warm. I have given up on the teenager that walks out the door wearing running shoes and a hoodie but the little ones get swathed in woollies. I am a strong believer in warmth as a means of providing comfort and calm to a baby. For newborns this means wearing a hat at all times. For very sensitive babies being warmly wrapped and swaddled can be an excellent strategy for calming them and providing security. Where to find these woolly wraps and cosy bundlers? Check out Hestia in Aurora. This is a store owned by Karen Weyler, a Waldorf teacher and expert in Early Childhood. Karen sells all manner of woolen long johns, hats, wraps and warm, beautiful clothing. The wool is blended with cashmere which makes it soft and comfortable. When I visited the store a few weeks ago the long johns were on sale for 25% off - good time to stock up because winter WILL keep coming back!!

The store is located on Yonge street in Aurora, East side of Yonge with plenty of parking in the rear. http://www.hestiaglobal.com/

Research Supporting the Powerful Effects of Chiropractic

I came across some research studies the other day that I thought were really great.

The first one looked at the effects of chiropractic on the immune system by reviewing the current literature on the subject. This paper outlines the many components of the immune system and the anatomical and physiological connections suggesting that the nervous system plays a role in the modulation of immune response. Their results suggest that chiropractic may influence various immune modulation cells and increase overal endorphin levels (or as I like to think of them, "happy hormones").

The other study was published in the Journal of Human Hypertension. The authors of this study report that chiropractic adjustments can significantly lower blood pressure in patients with Stage-1 hypertension. The chiropractic technique studied had the effect of not one but two blood pressure medications given in combination with no complications reported.

Pretty powerfull stuff.

Here's my dinner

Quinoa-Stuffed Peppers
Vegetarian Times Issue: February 1, 2009 p.66

This dish freezes well for future meals. Quinoa provides whole-grain goodness and a serving of protein.
Directions:
1. Heat oil in saucepan over medium heat. Add onion and celery, and cook 5 minutes, or until soft. Add cumin and garlic, and sauté 1 minute. Stir in spinach and drained tomatoes. Cook 5 minutes, or until most of liquid has evaporated.
2. Stir in black beans, quinoa, carrots, and 2 cups water. Cover, and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium-low, and simmer 20 minutes, or until quinoa is tender. Stir in 1 cup cheese. Season with salt and pepper, if desired.

3. Preheat oven to 350°F. Pour liquid from tomatoes in bottom of baking dish.

4. Fill each bell pepper half with heaping 3/4-cup quinoa mixture, and place in baking dish. Cover with foil, and bake 1 hour. Uncover, and sprinkle each pepper with 1 Tbs. remaining cheese. Bake 15 minutes more, or until tops of stuffed peppers are browned. Let stand 5 minutes. Transfer stuffed peppers to serving plates, and drizzle each with pan juices before serving.

One Yummy Nut

For those of you who know me it is no surprise that as a family we do not drink Cow's milk (another post for another time:). We choose either rice or almond milk instead and Earth's Own brand has become my #1 favorite!
Their Almond milk 'Almond Fresh' is absolutely delicious. It is made from real almonds, low in fat, cholesterol and is gluten free. It is also a great source of Calcium providing you with 30% your recommended daily intake and Vitamin D 45% RDI plus its a great source of Vitamin E.
Enjoy the refreshing nutty taste of Almond milk in a smoothie, in baked goods or poured over your cereal for a delicious change.
