Keep Your Heart and Your Head in the Game

Looking for ways to keep yourself on track? I find one of the best daily rituals is to read my quote of the day from Abraham Hicks. I signed up on their website and each morning I receive one beautiful quote to start my day. It reminds me to stay focused on my intention and if I have a moment I will cut and paste the quote to my journal and spend some time writing about what the information has made me consider. Today's quote:

"The discipline that we would like you to exercise is to make a decision that nothing is more important than that you feel good, and that you are going to find thoughts that feel better. Your cork floating is the only thing that is worthy of discipline."

---Abraham

NEW
A new find over the Christmas holidays from an insightful patient - www.tut.com this is a website from an inspirational writer named Mike Dooley. You can create a vision board on-line and like the Abraham Hicks site receive messages each day. What is interesting about those messages is that they are written with your name in them. Having your own name in the message makes it all the more personal and somehow for me, more effective.

HEALTH CANADA MAY ADD ANTI-CANCER DRUG TO CERTAIN FOODS

The federal government is making an unusual proposal. It's suggesting allowing food manufacturers to inject a cancer-fighting drug into fried goodies to counteract a substance in the foods that may be carcinogenic.

Health Canada is inviting public comments until Feb 21 on its idea to allow food manufacturers to add small amounts of the leukemia-fighter asparaginase to foods such as potato chips and french fries.

Research suggests asparaginase reduces the production of acrylamide, a potentially dangerous compound that is created during the high-temperature frying and baking of starchy foods.

Acrylamide made headlines a few years ago when Swedish scientists discovered high levels of it in deep-fried foods. It's thought that the substance is produced accidentally when sugars and other items in potatoes are exposed to high cooking temperatures. It has also been detected in cereals, pastries, cookies, breads, cocoa products and coffee, although at levels far below those in fried potato products, such as chips.

Studies have shown that acrylamide causes cancer in lab mice and rats. But its effect on human health is not clear; several studies have failed to prove that acrylamide is carcinogenic in humans.

Nevertheless, Health Canada is worried about the frying by-product. Earlier this year, it recommended adding acrylamide to the country's toxic substances list. And there are also regulations in the works that would limit levels of the chemical in food.

Rather than regulating acrylamide, food manufacturers would rather be allowed to add small amounts of asparaginase in food.

Asparaginase breaks down asparagine, an amino acid. In leukemia patients, asparagine allows cancer cells to grow. In food, asparagine is key ingredient in the production of acrylamide.

"Studies have definitely shown that using this enzyme in the manufacture of foods reduces the level of acrylamide," nutrition expert Leslie Beck told CTV News.

"Whether, at the end of the day, that reduces our potential, theoretical cancer risks, we don't know."

Health Canada says on its website its scientists have finished a detailed safety assessment on asparaginase and haven't found any health concerns. Asparaginase is destroyed in cooking so it's thought to have no impact on food or those who eat the foods.

Health Canada notes that the enzyme is already used in food manufacturing in the U.S., Australia, New Zealand, and Denmark. And it has been given a favourable evaluation by the Joint U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization /WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives.

Food manufacturers, too, are eager to be given permission to use the adrug as well.

"Food & Consumer Products of Canada has encouraged the federal governemnt to move swiftly towards its approval, as other modern countries in the world have," said the group's senior vice-president, Derek Nighbor.

Health Canada announced over the weekend that it's accepting feedback on the proposal for 75 days. If accepted, new rules could be implemented in six to eight months.

Thinking about 2010

I hear New Year's Resolutions coming ....

Almost everyone's NYR's involve some form of activity. Something you plan with hopes that it will bring you more peace, more relaxation, more strength/stamina or endurance... or a better body, whichever. I can't say I create New Year's Resolutions as much as I create a game plan for the year ahead. I've been thinking about what I'd like to do to challenge my mind & body for 2010. I've already registered for Ironman Canada. Yes, that should pretty much round out the year, but in the meantime ... while training for that event, I'd like to have fun with my training to make me take my mind off all the training I need to do for ironman. Make sense?

Here are some thoughts that you 'may' want to consider:

1. The Hartwell Challenge: Set in Aurora, there is a half marathon, 10 km, 5 km and Kid's mini mile. Sunday, April 25th, 2010. There are several FFC practitioners and practice members participating in the half marathon race. Let us know if you're interested in group runs. www.hartwellchallenge.com
2. Discover Yoga. We have an excellent yoga practitioner right here @ FFC. Jenn Pike, RHN is a nutritionist and exercise extraordinaire. She is an avid yoga instructor (mostly at Fit City) as well as being a Lululemon Ambassador. We highly recommend her classes as well as Yoga Source (www.yogasource.ca) and Hot Yoga (www.hotyogaaurora.com) in Aurora. For kids and their families we highly recommend Amanda McFadyen's Bliss Kids (www.blisskids.blogspot.com).
3. Master's Swim Clubs. Be open to joining a club's stroke improvement or advanced skills groups. I swim with the Aurora Master Ducks (www.masterducks.ca), but there are also excellent stroke development and swim teams with the Aurora Selkies (www.swimgym.ca) and also with the Town of Newmarket.

IF IF IF you are interested in giving triathlons a try, I recommend searching out try-a-tri races in the GTA. Try-a-tri races are VERY POPULAR and attract all ages. 400m swim, 10 km bike, 2.5 km run. They are fun & have the added advantage of cross training. It keeps it interesting and varied ...

www.msctriathlon.com : Multisport Triathlon Canada Race Series.
www.trisportcanada.com: Subaru Triathlon Series
www.barrietri.com : Barrie Triathlon, Duathlon and Kids of Steel Race
www.runwellevents.com: a TRi Kids series with a new race in Newmarket in June!

One of my favorite FREE training sites is www.trainingpeaks.com. I track all my workouts, stats and race endeavours. Love it.

Another excellent resource: www.active.com

Just some thoughts. Whatever you enjoy doing ... do it often.

Happy New Year, Laura

Tis the Season!

And don't mean the Christmas season, I am talking about the 'this is going to be the year I finally lose the weight, get in better shape' season.

We all have new goals we'd like to achieve this year or maybe just old ones we'd like to finally feel successful at - so where to begin?

Here are a few of my recommendations for taking one step in a different direction this year:

  1. Buy a Pedometer - on average we walk 2,000 -3,000 steps per day and by adding just 2,000 more you can maintain the weight your at and by adding 3,000 -5,000 more to that equalling a total of 5,000-10,000 you can start to lose weight!

  2. Resist Your Weight - Did you know that one of the best ways to strength train is by simply using your own body weight to workout? Using multi-movement, compound exercises to create a quick yet intense circuit is the best way to achieve quick results without costing you a lot of time or money.

  3. Get Bent - Yoga is by far one of the best was to conquer it all, strength, flexibility, better mind-body connection and manage stress effectively. My number one choice when I feel like I don't have time to fit it all in... I feel challenged during and rejuvenated when I leave, it doesn't get any better than that!

  4. Take on a Challenge - sign up for a running group, start swimming, join a dance class or tri-a-triathlon, I did this year and it was amazing, so good I am going back for more! Joining a group or paid-for activity keeps accountable and motivated, plus it always helps to have some playful competition:)

  5. Spin Your Wheels - Do you love great music, a workout geared to your own pace and sweating like crazy? If yes than you have to try indoor spinning...the time flies by.

  6. Eat More - Most people believe that to lose weight you have to eat less, this isn't always the case. Majority of weight-loss clients I work with aren't eating nearly enough to stoke their metabolism or stabilize their blood sugar; the two key ingredients to healthy successful weight loss. Consult with a nutritionist to set out realistic goals and determine how much you should be consuming

  7. Eat More Often - As mentioned above stabilized blood sugar levels is the main ingredient for healthy weight and healthy living. Eat every 3-4 hours totalling 5-6 smaller snacks and meals daily. By doing this you will decrease your insulin secretion, decrease your hunger and decrease cravings therefore increasing your energy and vitality.

  8. Use Portion Control - If you see it you will EAT it - even if you are not hungry. Start using a smaller plate at meals and watch your weight start to drop.

  9. Wean Out the Hidden Stuff - When I refer to hidden, its not that you don't know its there, its that you are eating these things daily and adding on average an extra 400-1,000 calories daily depending. These items are: spreads, dips, dressings, sauces, condiments, juice, pop, milk, lattes, cream, sugar etc.

  10. Last But Not Least - Be Happy! If you feel like your weight isn't the real issue find out what is and free yourself so you can move forward and live life to the fullest!!!

How Emotions Keep us Healthy

Emotional stress is a very real and very powerful contributor to our overall sense of health and wellbeing. Overcoming the effects of this type of stress is particularity important in the fall and winter months; a time when we receive minimal exposure to daily sunlight, our physical activity levels decrease, and we are inundated with the demands imposed on us from work, school, extracurricular activities, and all that life throws our way.

During these times of increased emotional stress, our nervous system typically goes into defence physiology, or a sympathetic state. The sympathetic nervous system is responsible for protecting our bodies from harm. When under stress, the body will manipulate its physiology to prepare itself for a flight or fight response to what it perceives as impending danger. It does this at the expense of other systems in the body, including that which is required for proper digestion, blood pressure regulation, organ function, and cognitive and rational thinking.

The parasympathetic nervous system, on the other hand, controls and regulates the functions of our body when we are in a restful and non threatened state, including proper organ functioning, decreased heart rate and blood pressure and rational thinking. It is when we are in a parasympathetic state that we feel good, we think clearly, and we self heal and regulate appropriately.

True health can be seen as the ability to heal. A sympathetic response is vital to proper nervous system functioning. It is only when the body gets stuck in this response that our health is compromised. I suggest finding things in your life that give you joy. Go dancing, spend time with friends and family, take a yoga class, read. Do anything that helps me to relax and stay healthy.

Consider choosing Chiropractic as one of your strategies to stay healthy this winter. Chiropractic works with the nervous system to restore proper parasympathetic balance so that the body can express its full potential to self heal.

This winter season, put you first. Ensure that you don’t get stuck in a flight or fight state. This will allow you to approach life with the tools you need to stay healthy, including the ability to deal with what comes your way with a clear and open mind.

Have a happy and healthy holiday
