Get a Better Sleep...Tonight!

The Top 10 Habits That Interfere with The Natural
Fat Burning-Benefits of Sleep

1.) Eating too close to bedtime
Late-night meals and snacks prevent your body from cooling down during sleep and raise your insulin level. As a result, less of the fat- burning and anti-aging hormones, melatonin and growth hormone, are released while you snooze.

2.) Sleeping with light exposure
When light hits your skin, it disrupts the production of melatonin. Studies have shown that even a small amount of light can cause a decrease in melatonin levels which affects sleep, interferes with weight loss and may raise your cancer risks.

3.) Too much liquid before bed
Drinking before bedtime can definitely increase your need for late-night trips to the loo. Waking to go to the washroom interrupts your natural sleep patterns. If you turn the light on when you go, you also run the risk of suppressing melatonin production.

4.) Exercising late at night
Regular exercise can certainly help you sleep better, as long as you do it early enough in the day. A late-night workout, especially a cardio session, raises body temperature significantly, preventing the release of melatonin. It can also interfere with your ability to fall asleep since it usually increases noradrenalin, dopamine and cortisol, which stimulate your brain activity.

5.) Too much TV or computer use before bed
Many of us enjoy watching favorite shows, catching up on emails or surfing the ‘Net in the evenings, but too much time in front of either screen close to bedtime can interfere with a good night’s rest. Both these activities increase the stimulating hormones noradrenalin and dopamine, which can hamper your ability to fall asleep.

6.) Keeping your bedroom too warm (higher than 70F).
Plenty of people like to feel cozy at bedtime, but a sleep environment that’s too warm can prevent the natural cooling that should take place in your body while you sleep. Without this cool-down process, melatonin and growth hormone release is disrupted.

7.) Sleeping in tight-fitting clothes or heavy blankets
Besides feeling comfy, your favourite PJs and blankets actually help you sleep better – but not if they’re too tight or too heavy. Strange as it may sound, wearing tight-fitting clothing at bedtime – even your bra or underwear — appears to raise your body temperature and has been proven to reduce the secretion of melatonin and growth hormone. Your body should cool while you sleep, therefore, heavy blankets should also be avoided.

8.) Failure to open the blinds or go outside in the morning
Remember, melatonin is supposed to be lowest first thing in the morning. If you remain in darkness, your body will not get the signal that the time has come to get up and go. High melatonin during the day leaves you feeling fatigued and unable to wake up properly. It may also lower serotonin leading to more depression, anxiety and cravings.

9.) Not getting the right amount of sleep
The American Cancer Association found higher incidences of cancer in individuals who consistently slept 6 hours or less or more than 9 hours nightly. New research recently reported that people who regularly sleep 7.5 hours per night live longer. Most sleep experts agree that 7—8 hours a night is optimal. However, some people may require more or less sleep than others. If you wake without an alarm and feel refreshed when you get up, you’re likely getting the right amount of sleep for you.
When your sleep is insufficient, your cortisol and hunger hormones both surge, causing a corresponding increase in insulin. You also experience decreases in the fat-burning and appetite controlling hormones.

10.) Going to bed too late
More than half the respondents to the 2005 National Sleep survey reported they are morning people with higher energy earlier in the day, while 41% considered themselves night owls. Evening people were more likely than morning people to experience
symptoms of insomnia, sleep apnea, enjoy less sleep than they felt they needed and take longer to fall asleep. Staying awake into the wee hours causes hormonal imbalance because it increases cortisol, decreases leptin and depletes growth hormone. This causes us to eat more and messes with our metabolism. Cortisol naturally begins to increase during the second half of your sleep – a small boost at 2 a.m., another at 4 a.m. and the peak at around 6a.m. If you’re just getting to bed immediately beforehand, you’re missing out on your most restful period of sleep. I advocate getting to bed between 10 –11 p.m. for this basic reason.

ANYTHING'S POSSIBLE

Kevin, Heather & Evan are part of the FFC family. We received this message from Heather and wanted to share it.
Hello All,
As most of you know, Kevin Mills sustained a serious spinal cord injury while attending his sister's wedding in Cuba. He was left a quadriplegic. Kevin has improved so much in the last 9 months, but he feels he must step up his recovery and so Kevin, Evan, Barb and I are heading down to Florida today. Kevin will be attending Step It Up Recovery Inc in Sanford (Check out the website http://www.stepituprecovery.org/). We'll be down there for 6 weeks and I will be updating regularily on Facebook on his group "PRAYING for Kevin Mills..Heather Cairns husband!! And daddy to Evan!" and on Youtube under "Kevin Mills Rehab".

Take care everyone and wish us all the best,
Heather and Kevin

You are truly an inspiration Kevin.

SOME THOUGHTS . . .

Do you ever wonder what it would be like if we faced any given situation without judgment or interpretation? What if we just said “ok”? As a chiropractor a large part of my communication with patients is focused on balance; specifically, the importance of maintaining balance and reducing the stress on the nervous system. This will allow the mind and body to achieve a vital state.

I wonder how much of the accumulated stress that builds up in our bodies might be dissipated if we do not allow it to affect our thoughts and emotional state in the first place? If I assess a certain situation as bad, then I feel bad about it, which creates a negative response not only in my emotional state, but in my physical body as well. So why not think “OK, so be it”. Prevent the thought from affecting you on a deeper level. Negative thoughts rarely work to change a situation anyway.

So why not take care of your body and mind by feeling good now.

Happy to be back at FFC

My husband and I are delighted to introduce the newest addition to our family, Miss Rose Ryan Warner. She was born on a sunny morning in July, an impressive and healthy 9lbs. 13 oz. As is often the case, the summer months have flown by. John and I have spent much of our time adjusting to the changes that arise as a new family of four, and Charlotte and Rose have been having a great time getting to know one another.

I am happy to announce that effective November 2nd I will be back adjusting patients during my regular scheduled hours. I am truly looking forward to connecting with practice members once again; you have been in my thoughts often over the past few months. For those of you that have had the opportunity to work with Dr. Oldham, she sends her warmest wishes.
I also want to take this opportunity to let everyone know that as a clinic we want to start giving back to the community by supporting the local food banks. Starting in November through to the end of December we will be accepting non-perishable food items. On a personal note, I am prepared to augment each donation provided by my patients with a donation of my own.

As we enter into the fall and winter months, I encourage everyone to take a proactive approach to your health and the health of your family. Don’t let stress get the better of you. Stay balanced, stay healthy.

From the desk of Carolyn, front desk extraordinaire. ..

"I cannot endure to waste anything as precious as autumn sunshine by staying in the house. So I spend almost all the daylight hours in the open air."
Nathaniel Hawthorne

This quote captures how I feel about the fall season. Thus far we have had exceptional weather and I cannot bear to not spend it outside. Sometimes I think I feel the need to absorb all the sunlight for shorter days ahead. It felt great to get out for a run this morning and later to mountain bike in Dufferin Forest. It was the perfect temperature.

It always seems there are lots of 'jobs' to do around the house to prepare for winter, but often many of these chores do not get completed at my house as there is such an urgent need to enjoy the fall days.

There are so many activities that are perfect for fall; hiking in the woods under a colourful canopy, one last boat ride before it is put away for next year, bike riding on a crisp day, taking the kids to the pumpkin patch, going for a drive to see the fall colours or sitting out on the back deck in a cozy sweater with a great book. I am so lucky to live very close to Hockley Valley and get to see the leaves changing each week. Living close to many great places to hike and cycle, I have a great variety of choices, Albion Hills Conservation Area, Mono Cliffs Provincial Park, Dufferin Forest (which is north of Mansfield) and the Bruce Trail in Hockley Valley.

I am certain you have some favourite spots in your area...so on the next beautiful fall day...put your chores aside (they will wait for later), and go out and enjoy your favourite fall activity. Dr. Foster's family hiking with the dogs at Scanlon Creek Conservation area just north of Bradford.

Get Active!

Top Ten Reasons Not To Try Chiropractic

10) “I like my right shoulder higher than my left.” You’re not alone…take a look around you. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to notice how out of balance many people are. I know a good tailor than can cover it up though.

9)“ The tingling and numbness in my fingers is actually starting to feel good” Good. Get used to it. It will only get worse. Maybe if you’re lucky, you’ll have surgery to correct it someday.

8) “These headaches I have are normal. They say so on the aspirin AD on T.V.” Headaches are NOT normal, regardless of what the drug companies want you to believe.

7) “Telling girls that I got this limp in the war, makes me an instant hit as parties” Low back and neck pain may get you sympathy, but it is certainly no party.

6) “A friend of a guy at work said his aunt’s sister-in-law’s older brother was hurt by a chiropractor” Who are those obscure people anyway? Chiropractic is beyond a doubt the safest of all the healing professions. It is documented and has the health care industry’s lowest malpractice insurance problems to prove it.

5) “My neck feels fine. So what if I can’t turn my head to the left….it’ll get better”. It may get better, but probably at the expense of something else. Chiropractic restores full motion.

4) “Surgery makes more sense to me. I’ve already had my gall bladder cut out, and I’m sure the doctors wouldn’t remove anything I really need.”
I’d rather attempt to restore health to sick tissue than surgically remove it, but of course I’m one of those crazy people who changes the oil in his car before the engine blows up.

3) “Back spasms are a great excuse for why I missed that 3 foot putt”Muscle spasms are merely a symptom of a much larger underlying problem. A thorough examination is necessary to uncover the cause of the problem, then correct it.

2) “If I stopped using all these drugs my prescription card would go to waste”
Over medication is a growing problem in our country today. All drugs have side effects. Only you can decide if the risks are worth the benefit.

Now for the Number 1 reason not to try chiropractic:

1) “This ringing in my ears drowns out my mother’s Guy Lombardo records”
Many people have found relief from headaches, asthma, leg pain and a variety of other disorders the safe, natural way with Chiropractic, NATURE has already cured Guy Lombardo.

From the Desk of Dr. Danielle Warner, ... family chiropractor

There is no such thing as a normal headache:

Ever notice how many marketing endeavours today contribute to the overall acceptance of disease and dysfunction as “normal”, or “a part of everyday living”, or “the natural consequence of aging”? Since when did it become normal to have a headache? As a chiropractor I often hear patients describe their level of health by putting the two words “normal” and “headache” together in the same sentence. Headaches are not normal, no matter how few, how mild or how easily they seem to vanish with Tylenol or Advil. Your body is doing exactly what it should by telling you that something is not quite right.

Instead of covering up the information that your body is giving you by taking in a symptoms suppressant, why not look to addressing the reason why the pain and or dysfunction is there in the first place? Headaches are a signal that something is wrong. If you smother the signal with drugs, the root cause will remain uncorrected and the headaches will likely recur. Your body has a strong internal wisdom. If you ignore it, your body will keep giving you louder and louder signals. Disease does not occur “all of a sudden”. Most dysfunction is an accumulation of several factors.

Staying healthy requires that you become an active participant. Maintaining a healthy diet, consistent exercise, and a positive attitude are vital first steps. Among the things that contribute to your health (the quality of the air, food and water you take in; how you handle emotional stress; your inherited weaknesses and strengths; your use of drugs; exercise; and relaxation) a healthy nervous system is absolutely essential. As a chiropractor, my main focus is on optimizing nervous system function.

A Chiropractor does not necessarily address issues of a specific disease or condition, rather they work to relieve stress and restore balance within the core neurological system-the central nervous system. With this accomplished, your body’s inherent restorative and recuperative ability is maximized.

Become a partner in your health-you will be pleasantly surprised to see how easy it is to learn the basics of healthy living. Taking responsibility for your health does not mean doing everything on your own. You should still turn to professionals for guidance, correction and help. Remember it is YOUR body giving you the signal. It is up to you then to take the next step.

Homeopathy and the Swine Flu

Is Homeopathy effective for the swine flu? for the seasonal flu? for any acute ailments?
The answer is yes. When using homeopathy to treat any acute illness I look at the specifics of the symptoms you are experiencing. I match those symptoms exactly to a remedy and then I give you a dose of that remedy. The remedy will support your body in moving through the illness as quickly and efficiently as possible. You may need a new remedy as your symptom picture changes so it is normal to communicate with me daily as you move through an acute complaint. I offer an Acute Care Program to cover all of your acute care calls on a monthly basis. For more detailed information on the Acute Care Plan please visit my website - www.pipermartin.com or chat with our friendly front desk staff at FFC.

In 1918, the Great Spanish Flu killed 20-40 million people worldwide. Conventional medicine lost 30% of their hospitalized patients. Incredibly in 27,000 documented hospitalized cases, homeopaths lost only 1.05% of their patients (Journal of the American Institute of Homeopathy 1921; 13:1028-43).
