I have had a number of people ask me my PERSONAL opinion about the current state of affairs on health, vaccination & flu, so I thought I'd compile a few of my thoughts and research endeavours. Take it for what its worth.
I've posted a few articles online and used a number of different sources. Dr. Mercola's website has a number of good resources, although I often get stats off of the Centre for Disease Control. Yes, it is scary and tragic when anyone dies for any reason, but something to keep in mind is that this is definitely blown way out of proportion.
You've probably already read that 5000 people worldwide have died of H1N1 related illness. 250,000-500,000 people die EVERY year with the flu. The vaccine is experimental, passed into general circulation after only 3 weeks of clinical trials. The Cdn gov't had to absolve the pharmaceutical company of any future liability so that they couldn't be sued. It has squalene and thimerosal in it (both are adjuvants and highly controversial). One has been heavily linked to Gulf War Syndrome and autoimmune diseases and the other is a mercury compound (there is no safe amount of mercury in the body). Its dangerous.
Some thoughts - remember HIV? It was going to kill everyone. Avian flu? Ditto. H1N1 - that too. And so there will be others. I think more about how I support my family's well being and less about what to inject into them. Vaccinations have become a multibillion dollar industry. Perspective? They are developing vaccines for obesity, smoking and depression. Need I say more?
Things to consider to support immunity:
1. Vit C daily - we use chewables 2x/day
2. Vitamin D (necessary for antibody production. We are deficient in Canada due to lack of sun). I buy Carlson brand - they don't taste bad and we all chew the oil filled capsule. 1000-2000 IU/day.
3. Probiotics. This keeps healthy bacteria plentiful and strengthens your bowel's immune system. We use Genestra's HMF capsules. I try and take this daily and give it to the kids every couple of days. I break open the capsule and put it in a little yoghurt.
Of course, a multivitamin/mineral is a good choice.
In the case of immune system challenges we will use OIL OF OREGANO and/or BEE PROPOLIS. Both are very effective antibacterial/antivirals. We use tincture. 20 drops, 3x/day for adults and 10 drops 3x/day for the kids in a little water. Amazing stuff.
The base: sleep (don't compromise this - its imperitive), high quality food (building blocks for all immunity), limited sugar (juice is pure sugar ... be thoughtful of halloween treats. Sugar impaires immune function), moderate exercise (unless compromised in your immunity), happiness (a schedule that keeps the family unstressed) and water (lots of it). Getting spinal adjustments are very supportive of immune system function. Try not to suppress fevers as its the body's way of elevating core temperature to kill viruses and bacteria. Consult a homeopath to get natural support.
Just some thoughts. Does that help?
On my husband's workplace forum there was a pilot who wrote in yesterday that his daughter had an immediate seizure yesterday when she was vaccinated. They rushed her to the hospital and it was the 2nd case they'd seen at the hospital that day.
Every person's health history is different, but I think its important to use common sense and perspective when making these decisions.
With warmth, Laura

BEE PROPOLIS @ FFC
FFC has started to carry BEE PROPOLIS and is available for purchase.
The Health Benefits of Bee Propolis
In order to see the health benefits of propolis, we dig scientific journals. Let’s see how modern medical science conforms with ancient folk wisdom.
Improving Immune System
Professor S. Scheller, the head of a team of four doctors at the Institute for Microbiology at the Medical Academy in Poland found that propolis is able to stimulate the immune system.
It stimulates the formation of antibodies to build body resistance to many diseases. It also helps the body in releasing substance against cellular deterioration.
He also concluded that other propolis health benefits may include improved physical, intellectual and sexual performance and makes injured tissue heal faster.
The study also concluded that propolis is non toxic.
Treat Burns
Another benefit of propolis is in treating second degree burns. Research showed that propolis cream gave about the same result as normally prescribed cream.
However, propolis cream reduce patient’s inflammation and helped the skin heal faster.
Various studies have confirmed that propolis stimulates enzyme systems, cell metabolism, circulation, collagen formation and improved healing of burn wounds.
It is believe to be a result of a substance called arginine.
Increase Fertility
One isolated study had tested the benefit of propolis on women with infertility and endometriosis. The study indicated that consumption of 500mg of propolis twice daily resulted in pregnancy rate of 60% as opposed to 20% for women not given propolis.
It is still unclear how propolis would give this effect.
Potential Cancer Drug
A report published in the Cancer Research (Sep 15,93;53 1482-88) stated that caffeic acids in propolis might help prevent colon cancer. The article described how these caffeic acids were able to prevent the formation of pre cancerous tissues in rats after the animal were exposed to cancer causing chemicals.
Another study done in 1990 reported that propolis chemicals could act against ovary cancer in hamster and sarcoma-type tumors in mice.
Read some studies done on propolis and it’s ability to fight cancer here.
Bowel Problems
Propolis can also help patients suffering from inflammatory bowel problems like Chron’s disease and ulceration colitis.
In June 2001, Dr. Ralph Golan reported how ulceration colitis responded well to propolis therapy. This was reported in his article published in Townsend Letters For Doctors.
Dental care
One useful application of bee propolis is in dental care. Propolis mouthwash used after an oral surgery appears to shorten the healing time. A study done in 1991 showed that rats given propolis in their drinking water got less caries compared to other rats.
Another study done in 1986 proposed propolis as a valuable subsidiary treatment for gum infection and plague.
It is also used in dental surgery as natural and safe disinfectant.
Latest study on the use of Brazilian Propolis on periodontitis treatment
Protecting Liver
Two studies done in 1986 and 1987 showed that propolis may help in protecting our liver. In these studies, propolis was effective in protecting the liver against alcohol and tetrachloride.
Improve Antibiotic Effectiveness
Australian scientists, E.L Ghisalberti of the Department of Organic Chemistry at the University of Western Australia showed that propolis increases the effectiveness of penicillin or other antibiotics from 10 to 100 folds.
This may help reduces the number of side effects associated with antibiotics and lower the over dependency on antibiotics by doctors.
Veterinary Applications
Propolis offers some benefits to breeders by improving weight gain and reduce diarrhea in their animals.
A study done in 1987 showed that 5 ml of propolis solution given to milk-fed calves can help achieve the above results.
Studies done to rabbits have also showed that propolis could help treat coccidiosis and eimeria. It is also beneficial at treating mastitis.
Other medical benefits of propolis
Studies done in rats and mice had shown that concentrated propolis given to the rodents reduced their blood pressure, produces sedative effect as well as protects the liver and stomach against tetrachloride and ulcers.
All these were achieved without any side effects.

Homeopathy for a Happy Halloween
Three great remedies to consider having on hand for a Happy Halloween:
Fear - there is a great potential for fright on Halloween night - if your little one gets a fright give them a dose of Aconite 1M. Two pellets of this remedy will alleviate the immediate fear but also assist them in processing the experience.
Excitement - After a night of trick or treating little people find it hard to sleep. A dose of Coffea 200C will help calm their nervous system and allow sleep to come a little easier. This is a great remedy after too much excitement or a very dynamic experience that creates racing thoughts and sleeplessness.
Gut Rot - Simply too much candy. Consider skipping the food dye treats this year and stick to chocolate - at least it is a real food. Stomach aches from too much candy can be alleviated by Nux vomica 200C. Nux vomica is for overindulgence of any kind - this include alcohol, food or drugs. It is a liver remedy and assists your body in detoxing.
For more information on any of these remedies please feel free to contact me directly at Foster Family Chiropractic - 905-898-8098 or www.fosterchiropractic.com

Apples to Oysters - the beginning
So begins our book club discussion on Margaret Webb's - Apples to Oysters - A Food Lover's Tour of Canadian Farms. Join in at any point and share your thoughts as you read through this dynamic little book.........
The introduction to this book begins with information about Margaret's life growing up on a farm and the way she was fed as a result of that. She received fresh food, grown on her own land - available and nourishing.
This prompted a question about my own childhood journey through food and how this was being translated to my children. Who nourished you? What was the source of the food you received and how does that experience reverberate in your life now?
I think the idea of food being nourishing can happen on many levels. Food prepared with love seems to me to be more charged regardless of what it truly is. Good food prepared with love would be the best.
My own mother was a teenager when I was born. She fed me very cheaply - I remember her telling me that their food budget was 17.00 per week. We actually ate food like Spam - what is that anyway - the inside of a hotdog??? As I grew older she developed a better sense of nutrition and by the end of my time at home we were fully organic, whole grain, no junk food type of people. I went off to university and proceeded to eat junk - processed foods and sugar but after about 6 months I literally couldn't stomach it. I went back to my comfort foods -
That is my hope for my kids, that the food I give them will become their comfort foods, the food that will sustain and nourish them throughout their lives.

NOTHING FAILS LIKE SUCCESS
Are you struggling to make changes or respond to changing conditions? I know many people right now are being forced to change the way they work or live because of our turbulent environment. What we might all consider in these times is what the great historian Arnold Toynbee once said:
Nothing fails like success.
What does that mean exactly? Well, if you consider the challenges you’re facing, you might just be using an old approach that isn’t equal to the challenge. In other words, when we have a challenge and the response is equal to the challenge, that’s called success. But once we have a new challenge, the old, once successful response no longer works. That’s why it’s called a failure.
We have to examine our paradigms (our view of things), our tools, our skills to determine if we’re approaching the problem in the right way. As a first step, we may even step back and make sure we’ve correctly defined the problem. Then we need to see if, based on the evidence of results or lack of results, if we need a new approach.
As you ponder your challenges, consider if you need a new mindset, a new skillset or toolset. You may need to adjust your view, try a different perspective or a new way to think about it. Then you may need to acquire some new skills or tools to tackle the problem. What ever the case, you may need to find a new model to drive success. This can be an exciting proposition because you will most likely find new growth and development in the process—this is success!
Remember: nothing fails like success. Be vigilant and be ready to continually learn and adapt to new challenges, which will surely come your way.
