FFC IS SEEKING AN AMAZING REGISTERED MASSAGE THERAPIST!

The FFC Team is currently looking for an amazing massage therapist to join our clinic! If you or anyone you know may be interested please contact our office at 905-898-8098. An excellent opportunity awaits!

Midwife with Available Appointments

Hello!

I am joining Kensinton Midwives in October which means that I am seeking "late to care clients." If you know of anyone who is due in October, November, December, and onwards who would like to be in midwifery care (and they live in Toronto), please pass this message along. I also speak Spainsh, for anyone looking for a Spanish speaking midwife. Midwifery care is covered by OHIP, and there is no charge for midwifery care if you DON'T have OHIP either. Midwives provide care for women throughout pregnancy, during the birth, and for 6 weeks postpartum. Women have the option of choosing a home or hospital birth. If you are interested, or would like more information, you can contact me directly through email (safire_naranjo@hotmail.com), or contact Kensington Midwives at 416 928-9777 and request "SAFIRE" as your midwife. You will have to leave a message on the answering machine and someone will get back to you to do an intake. Then you will be booked for an initial visit with me, or another midwife at the clinic. The Kensington Midwives clinic is located at 340 College Street (College and Spadina). The hospital we work out of is St Joseph's Health Centre. Thanks for helping to spread the word!

Warmly, Safire Naranjo

THIS is LANDMARK information ... wordy but worth reading

Chiropractic Influence on Oxidative Stress and DNA Repair
07 Mar 2005

There is a growing body of evidence that wellness care provided by doctors of chiropractic may reduce health care costs, improve health behaviors, and enhance patient perceived quality of life. Until recently, however, little was known about how chiropractic adjustments affected the chemistry of biological processes on a cellular level.

In a landmark study published this week in the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research (JVSR; http://www.jvsr.com), chiropractors collaborating with researchers at the University of Lund found that chiropractic care could influence basic physiological processes affecting oxidative stress and DNA repair. These findings offer a scientific explanation for the positive health benefits reported by patients receiving chiropractic care.

The researchers measured serum thiol levels in 21 patients under short-term chiropractic care and 25 patients under long-term chiropractic care. The results were compared to those of a non-chiropractic treated control group of 30 subjects. Long-term chiropractic care of two or more years was shown to re-establish a normal physiological state independent of age, sex, or nutritional supplements. Symptom-free or primary wellness subjects under chiropractic care demonstrated higher mean serum thiol levels than patients with active disease, and produced some values that were higher than normal wellness values.

Serum thiols are primary antioxidants, and serve as a measure of human health status. The test provides a surrogate estimate of DNA repair enzyme activity, which has been shown to correlate with lifespan and aging.

Dr. Christopher Kent, one of the authors explained, Going through life, we experience physical, chemical, and emotional stress. These stresses affect the function of the nervous system. We hypothesized that these disturbances in nerve function could affect oxidative stress and DNA repair on a cellular level.

Oxidative stress, metabolically generating free radicals, is now a broadly accepted theory of how we age and develop disease, Kent continued. Oxidative stress results in DNA damage, and inhibits DNA repair. DNA repair is the mechanism which fixes the damage caused by environmental impact.

Chiropractors apply spinal adjustments to correct disturbances of nerve function. Chiropractic care appears to improve the ability of the body to adapt to stress, continued Kent. Further research is needed to gain additional insights that will ultimately lead to improved clinical outcomes, he said.

The study was a collaborative involving Camgen, Inc. of Victoria, B.C. Canada; Chiropractic Leadership Alliance in Mahwah, NJ; Biomedical Diagnostic Research, LLC in Chesterland, Ohio; and Department of Cell and Molecular Biology of Tumor Immunology, University of Lund, Sweden.

JVSR is a peer-reviewed scientific journal devoted to subluxation-based chiropractic research affiliated with the World Chiropractic Alliance (WCA), an international organization representing doctors of chiropractic. WCA promotes the traditional, drug-free and non-invasive form of chiropractic as a means of correcting vertebral subluxations that cause nerve interference.

The 2009 Summer Challenge

This year has been lots of fun! I decided it would be a great year to try out the sport of triathlon. Soooo... last winter I secretly signed up for Muskoka Half Ironman for Sept 2009, and then quickly made myself tell all my friends so that I had to complete it for sure!

Well... Muskoka 70.3 is 9 days away and I'm excited to get going. I joined the Aurora Master Ducks Stroke Development last fall and begrudgingly swam 2-3 times per week without fail. I got up at 5 am most Saturday mornings all winter to meet my indoor cycling group for 2-4 hour trainer rides (ug). And I ran, ran, ran. I've had a blast (90% of the time, anyways). Over the summer I've participated in 5 triathlons - everything from a short sprint to an olympic. Lets just say that I've learned a lot.
An early season road race at Angus Glen in April '09.
A rather cold beginning of the season duathlon in Waterloo. Brrrrr.
Yahoo! A 3rd place finish in my first triathlon in June!
My first introduction to long course triathlons in Huntsville in June. Note: It's VERY hilly in the Muskoka's!
The fun continues in Gravenhurst with the deep water start off of the steamships. Petrified ... DON'T LOOSE THE GOGGLES. I didn't.
My last triathlon before the big race: Cobourg in August.

So, wish me luck. My first half ironman on September 13th!

Apples to Oysters - Fall Book Club

To celebrate the harvest we are hosting a book club all about FOOD. We all love food at FFC and we are pretty passionate about eating good food. What makes food good? Well this book offers some ideas that are worthwhile to consider.

Apples to Oysters: A Food Lover’s Tour of Canadian Farms
by Margaret Webb

In this engaging and entertaining book, Margaret Webb introduces us to 11 quintessential Canadian foods and outstanding farmers who produce them -- or, as she calls them, chefs of the soil and the sea, tractor-seat philosophers, poet biologists, thingamajig inventors, and zealous educators.

Her stories about farmers fighting to do what’s right, for food and the environment, are inspiring, poignant, gritty. They will make you hungry. They will make you laugh. They will make you run to your nearest farmers’ market to hug a farmer.

Curious about food and how passion impacts our food? Join our on-line discussion about this book. We will begin posting on October 1st, 2009 and journey through the book together. We will meet once a month in person to discuss the book and its impact on our own lives and our relationship to food. Pick it up and dive in.
